Police and firefighters were called to the scene around midnight on Tuesday, where they found the building fully engulfed in flames and thick smoke billowing from the windows. Officer Carlos Queliz, who responded to the call, discovered a set of keys in front of the apartment door and unlocked it. Inside, they found three children, including a 10-month-old baby, and the lifeless body of 30-year-old Den’Jah Moore, the children’s mother, who had been stabbed.

Tragically, the 10-month-old baby did not survive and died at the hospital. The other two children, aged 4 and 5, are currently in critical condition. Investigators quickly determined that the fire had been intentionally set in two locations, with all four burners on the stove turned on and burned paper and a box on top. They believe the initial fire started in a bedroom.

The father of at least two of the children, Charles Leon Ivey, was identified as a suspect. Police went to his home in nearby Ormond Beach and found him loading suitcases and bags into an SUV. They noticed an injury to his leg and a cut on his hand. Ivy claimed he had removed a fender from a trailer, causing the injuries. However, investigators obtained traffic camera footage showing Ivy leaving the scene around the time of the fire, and he was found in possession of Moore’s cellphone.

Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari Young described the crime as “horrendous and horrific” and said investigators are still trying to determine a motive. Ivy is currently in custody, facing charges of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and arson.

Chief Young praised the swift actions of the first responders, who managed to rescue the surviving children from the burning apartment. He emphasized that without their intervention, the 4- and 5-year-olds could have also perished. The community is devastated by this tragic event, and authorities are working to ensure justice is served for the victims.
