Irish Woman’s Murder Highlights Importance of Recognizing Domestic Violence Warning Signs
The tragic death of Denise Morgan, a 39-year-old Irish woman, in New York City has sparked a conversation about the need to pay attention to “red flags” in relationships. Morgan was found dead at a property in Queens on October 21st, in what the police are calling an apparent murder-suicide.

Morgan’s sisters, Lisa and Shannon Morgan, are now speaking out about the issue of domestic violence in an effort to raise awareness. They believe that their sister fell victim to years of coercive abuse at the hands of her former partner, 33-year-old Joed Taveras.
According to the sisters, the abuse became increasingly physical in recent months. They have even shared text messages from Denise in the weeks leading up to her death, where she revealed incidents of strangulation and threats with a knife.
The family is urging others to not ignore warning signs of domestic violence in their own relationships. “Don’t hide anything from your family,” Shannon Morgan said. “Sometimes as women, we tend to ignore this behavior – the jealousy, the controlling – and you’re embarrassed to speak out about it because you know that you’re going to go back to the abuser. It’s shame, it’s embarrassing.”
Denise Morgan had plans to move into a new apartment just 10 days after her tragic death. The sisters believe that she had ended her relationship with Taveras, which may have triggered his violent response.

“We knew she was in a bad situation…that’s the guilt that’s going to live with us forever is knowing what could have been,” Shannon added.
The sisters emphasized the importance of recognizing early warning signs within the first few months of a relationship. They encourage others to “walk when you see the red flags.”
The family is still grieving and trying to come to terms with the loss of Denise, a mother-of-one. They hope that by sharing their story, they can help prevent others from experiencing similar tragedies.
