A man from Atlanta, Georgia has finally been identified 45 years after his body was found in eastern Laurel County. Kentucky State Police Detective James Royal reopened the case and sent preserved evidence to the FBI Laboratories. The evidence was used in the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) fingerprint database in hopes of identifying the victim in an ongoing murder investigation. The man has now been identified as Michael Murray. Murray, originally from Atlanta, was believed to have been living in California at the time of his death.
KSP Trooper and Public Affairs Officer Scottie Pennington confirmed that Murray’s body was discovered on Coon Club Road, near Farris Road in eastern Laurel County. The circumstances surrounding how and why Murray ended up in this area remain unknown. Equally mysterious is how and why his body was taken to the Coon Club area. Pennington did reveal, however, that the cause of Murray’s death is believed to be homicide.

Following the confirmation of Murray’s identity, the search for his next of kin began. It was discovered that Murray had a sister residing in North Carolina.
