54-Year-Old Upland Man Killed in Violent Standoff with Law Enforcement

A 54-year-old man from Upland, California, died during a violent end to an hours-long standoff with law enforcement in San Bernardino County on Monday night. The incident began when deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department went to a residence in Upland to serve a search warrant. Two individuals were contacted at the home, but a third person, later identified as Charles Staudenmayer, began firing at the authorities and barricading himself inside.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Specialized Enforcement Division and officers from the Upland Police Department responded to the scene to assist. Crisis negotiators spent several hours attempting to persuade Staudenmayer to come out of the home, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

During the standoff, tear gas was deployed and authorities attempted to enter the home. It was at this point that the suspect allegedly started setting off explosives, according to CBS News Los Angeles. Approximately six hours after the incident began, a fire broke out inside the house.

Video footage obtained by KTLA showed heavy smoke and flames engulfing the residence while firefighters from the Upland Fire Department worked to extinguish the blaze. Nearby homes were evacuated as a precautionary measure. Staudenmayer exited the burning home and was subsequently shot and killed by deputies.

No other individuals were inside the home at the time of the standoff and fire, and no further injuries were reported. The San Bernardino County Fire Department is currently investigating the cause of the fire, while detectives from the Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division are looking into the “lethal use of force encounter.”
