The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) has reported that two inmates at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi killed another inmate on Wednesday morning. The incident occurred just before 9 a.m. when 38-year-old David Moreno was attacked by two inmates identified as Armando Taylor, 41, and Carlos Cervantes, 39.

Authorities had to use “chemical agents” to separate the inmates involved in the altercation at the maximum-security facility. Moreno, who was stabbed multiple times, received immediate medical treatment from prison staff. He was then transported to an outside medical facility but tragically died during the ride at around 9:40 a.m.

Following the incident, guards discovered three “inmate-manufactured weapons,” and both Cervantes and Taylor were moved into restricted housing. Movement within the prison has been limited as a result, according to CDCR officials.

Moreno had been serving a life sentence for attempted first-degree murder in Los Angeles County and had been imprisoned for nearly 20 years. He was also eligible for parole and could have potentially been released in the future. Additionally, Moreno had an additional conviction for battery on a non-prisoner during his time incarcerated.

Cervantes, who arrived at the prison in 2018, is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole after being convicted of two first-degree murders. He has also previously been convicted of possession of a manufactured weapon while in prison. Taylor has been in prison since 2017 after being convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. Like Cervantes, Taylor is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole and has received additional sentencing for an assault committed while incarcerated.

The Kern County District Attorney’s Office and the prison’s investigative unit are currently investigating the incident as a homicide. The official cause of Moreno’s death will be determined by the Kern County medical examiner.

The California Correctional Institution, which has been in operation for 90 years, currently houses approximately 1,700 inmates.
