The victim, Pratima Kispatta (25), also hailing from Odisha, was found dead after her body was discovered stuffed in a suitcase near a construction site on CST-LBS Marg in Kurla on Sunday. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Raj Tilak Roushan stated that the deceased was identified by her sister, who recognized her photograph distributed through various channels.

Investigations revealed that Kispatta had lost her job two months ago and was living with Barla, who works at a sweet shop in Dharavi. The couple had first met during the Covid-19 lockdown while returning to Odisha from Mumbai. They later returned to the city in July and began living together in Dharavi.

According to the police, Barla suspected Kispatta of having an affair, leading to frequent arguments between them. During interrogation, Barla confessed that in the early hours of Sunday, they had another heated argument, which escalated into violence. In a fit of rage, he strangled her and subsequently placed her lifeless body in a suitcase.

Barla then hired an autorickshaw from Sion and dumped the suitcase on CST-LBS Marg. He had initially planned to place the suitcase on an outstation train at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus but changed his mind and abandoned it on the road instead.
