Police in Luwero District are currently investigating the death of a worker at Victoria Sugar factory in Ndibulungi village. The deceased, identified as Isaac Rwothomiyo, 25, was allegedly crushed to death by machines in the factory on Monday. According to the Savannah Regional Police Spokesperson, Mr. Sam Twineamazima, preliminary investigations indicate that a heap of waste material, known as bagasse, fell on Rwothomiyo before he slipped into the machines, resulting in his tragic demise.

Detectives from Luwero Central Police Station quickly responded to the scene after receiving a report from the Human Resource Officer. The remains of the deceased were then transported to Mulago Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination. Mr. Twineamazima highlighted that the machines were being operated without proper safety measures, putting workers at risk of death in the event of contact. The investigation into the case of negligence and disregard for safety regulations is currently ongoing, with statements from workers being recorded to aid in the process.

As a result of the incident, operations at the factory have been suspended. The management of the factory has yet to comment on the matter. This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of implementing and adhering to safety protocols in workplaces to prevent such accidents from occurring.

Unfortunately, this is not the first incident of its kind in the region. In April of this year, a worker lost their life after slipping into a rolling machine at China Chan Jiang Steel and Iron factory in Matugga. Similarly, in May, a staff member at Simba cement factory in Tororo died after falling off a ladder while attempting to repair a transporter conveyor belt. These incidents highlight the need for stricter safety measures and greater emphasis on training and awareness in industrial workplaces.

The investigation into the death of Isaac Rwothomiyo will continue as the authorities seek to determine the cause of the accident and hold those responsible accountable for their negligence.
