Tragic Electrocution Deaths in Bengaluru: 23-year-old Woman and Child, Saundarya and Suviksha, Victim of Rodent Infestation

Bengaluru witnessed a tragic incident on Sunday, where a woman and her nine-month-old daughter lost their lives due to electrocution after coming into contact with a live wire in the Hopefarm area. In response to this unfortunate event, the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM) announced on Tuesday that rodents in a nearby apartment were the cause of the mishap, according to their preliminary investigation.

The presence of rodents near a transformer site resulted in the tripping of the feeder line, while the lack of proper grounding for the snapped transmission wire led to the electrocution, explained a BESCOM official. The incident has highlighted the issue of civic apathy in the city.

Karnataka Energy Minister KJ George expressed his sorrow over the incident, stating that it should not have happened. He referred to the death of the mother and child as “unfortunate.” Regarding the suspension of five officials, he clarified that while the officials on the spot may not be at fault, they have been suspended as a precautionary measure.

To investigate the matter thoroughly, four committees have been formed, including an internal BESCOM team, a police team, an electrical inspectorate team, and an independent team. The Energy Minister emphasized the need for a comprehensive investigation and has instructed all ESCOMs across the state to take necessary precautions.

The victims of this tragic incident have been identified as Saundarya, a 23-year-old woman, and her daughter Suviksha. The incident occurred around 6 am on Sunday when Saundarya and her child were walking on the footpath in AKG Colony. It is suspected that the woman inadvertently stepped on a live wire, resulting in the electrocution of both her and her child.

Upon receiving the information, passersby immediately alerted the Kadugodi police, who promptly registered a case and initiated an investigation into the matter. The authorities are now working diligently to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident and to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
