One more person has died after a family returning from performing Chhath Puja in Lakhisarai district of Bihar, India, was shot at by unidentified individuals, according to police. The Patna Medical College and Hospital has confirmed the death, bringing the total number of fatalities to three, with two others dying at the scene. The victims have been identified as Chandan Kumar, Rajnandan Kumar, and an unidentified individual. The incident occurred at Punjabi Mohalla under the Kabaiya police station on Monday morning. The family was attacked while returning home after offering prayers at Chhath Ghat. The police believe the shooting incident was related to a love affair.
Superintendent of Police Pankaj Kumar stated that the incident took place in Punjabi Mohalla, where Ashish Chaudhary, a neighbor of the family, opened fire on them. Chaudhary wanted to marry a girl from the victim’s family, but they rejected the proposal. Four other family members, Lovely Kumari, Preeti Kumari, Durga Kumari, and Shashi Bhushan Kumar, were injured in the attack. They were initially taken to Begusarai Sadar Hospital and later transferred to the Patna Medical College and Hospital for further treatment. The police recovered a pistol used in the crime at the scene.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticized the ruling Janata Dal (United)-Rashtriya Janata Dal alliance in connection with the shooting incident. BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla accused Chief Minister Nitish Kumar of allowing a “jungle raj” to prevail in Bihar, particularly after forming an alliance with the RJD. Poonawalla claimed that criminal activity has increased in Bihar since the RJD came to power with Nitish Kumar, resulting in a state of lawlessness.
