Port Orange Homeowner Shoots and Kills Justin Dematos, Intruder, in Self-Defense

PORT ORANGE, Fla. – Police have released additional information about a recent incident in which a homeowner in Port Orange fatally shot an intruder. The shooting occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning at a residence on Pelham Drive.

According to investigators, the incident unfolded around 12:05 a.m. when the homeowner and their family were awakened by their dogs barking and heard noises in the backyard. The intruder, identified as 46-year-old Justin Dematos, approached the home after midnight.

Dematos rang the doorbell and was confronted by the homeowner, who verbally challenged him. This prompted Dematos to leave. However, he then proceeded to the side of the house, where he removed the screen from a slightly open bedroom window.

When the homeowner again confronted Dematos about his presence, the intruder remained silent. Instead, Dematos attempted to enter the house through the window. In response, the homeowner fired a shot, fatally injuring the intruder.

Fortunately, none of the residents inside the home were harmed during the incident. Police have confirmed that Dematos acted alone, and there were no accomplices involved.
