John Crawford III: Beavercreek Walmart Shooting Victim, Nine Years after Police-Involved Shooting

By | November 21, 2023

Beavercreek Walmart, the site of Monday’s shooting incident, has a history of high-profile incidents. This latest shooting comes just over nine years after a previous police-involved shooting at the same store. In August 2014, John Crawford III was shot and killed by Beavercreek police after a 911 caller reported seeing him walking around the store with a rifle, pointing it at women and children. However, it was later discovered that the reported rifle was actually a pellet gun from a store shelf.

Surveillance footage showed that there were no women and children in the vicinity of Crawford when he allegedly pointed the weapon. Two police officers approached him while he was talking on a cell phone, and Officer Sean Williams fired almost immediately after announcing themselves.

In 2020, the City of Beavercreek settled a wrongful death lawsuit with Crawford’s family and estate, paying them $1.7 million. This incident was not the only one to occur at the Beavercreek Walmart. Earlier this month, the store had to close due to a fire that was later determined to be caused by two juveniles. The fire resulted in the evacuation of the store and nearby businesses.

In November 2023, a 15-year-old boy was arrested and charged with aggravated arson, vandalism, and inducing panic for another fire at the same Walmart. Fortunately, no one was injured in either fire incident.

In addition to the fires, the Beavercreek Walmart also experienced a rooftop fire in March 2018, which led to the evacuation of the store and nearby businesses. Walmart sued Tesla for “gross negligence” in 2019, claiming that fires had occurred at seven store rooftops between 2012 and 2018, causing millions of dollars in damage.

The Beavercreek Walmart has certainly had its fair share of incidents over the years, from police shootings to fires. These incidents have left a lasting impact on the community and have raised concerns about safety and security at the store.
