Marquelle Jones, a behavior technician at Hendley Elementary School, expressed frustration over the incident, stating, “It’s frustrating because at the end of the day, we just want the kids to be safe here.” Jones highlighted the difficulty of protecting children when gunshots are going off near their classrooms.

When school leaders were informed by D.C. police about the shooting, the school immediately went on lockdown. The incident occurred on 4th Street near the intersection of Chesapeake Street, where police are currently investigating the circumstances that led to the deadly shooting.

Jones revealed that these types of shootings are becoming all too common for his students, with many of them discussing such incidents among themselves. He emphasized that it is not an environment children should have to live in, stating, “Regardless of what goes on outside of this building, inside this building they are regular kids.”

The incident comes at a time when the city is grappling with a surge in homicides. Recent data from the Metropolitan Police Department shows that there have been 247 homicides so far in 2023, the highest total in nearly two decades.
