The Fulton County District Attorney’s office is expected to release body camera footage this week that shows the incident leading to the tasing death of Johnny Hollman, a 62-year-old Atlanta deacon. Hollman died on August 10 after being shocked with a stun gun by an Atlanta police officer during a traffic stop.

The DA’s office stated on Monday that it determined the “video may be released without negatively affecting the investigation” and that it would be made available to media outlets who filed an open records request. While an exact date for the release was not provided by the DA’s office, attorney Mawuli Davis, who represents the Hollman family, stated that the family anticipates the video’s release on Wednesday.

The Hollman family has been calling for the release of the body camera footage for months in light of a joint investigation by the Atlanta Police Department (APD) and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). The Fulton County District Attorney’s Office is also conducting its own investigation into the incident.

Hollman’s daughter, Arnitra Hollman, stated in an interview that her father had chronic asthma and was heard saying, “I can’t breathe” during his interaction with the police officer. An autopsy conducted by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office listed the cause of death as “homicide” due to cardiac dysrhythmia associated with the use of a stun gun.

The Atlanta police officer involved in the incident, Kiran Kimbrough, was terminated for failing to follow the department’s standard operating procedures. Kimbrough’s attorney plans to appeal the termination, stating that Kimbrough denies any wrongdoing or policy violations.

Protests have taken place in Atlanta following Hollman’s death, with calls for the release of the body camera footage. The release of the footage is hoped to provide answers to the family and shed light on the events leading to Hollman’s death.

The Atlanta Police Department has since changed its policy regarding traffic citations, allowing officers to write “refusal to sign” on tickets rather than making an arrest. The department found a handgun and marijuana in Hollman’s vehicle after his death, but it is unclear if the handgun was legal.

The release of the body camera footage is expected to provide further insight into the circumstances surrounding Hollman’s death and will likely impact ongoing investigations into the incident.
