A 65-year-old man, Igwe Ambrose, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by Justice Abiola Soladoye of the Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court. The court found Ambrose guilty of defiling two minors and charged him with four counts of sexual assault and indecent treatment of a child. The prosecution accused Ambrose of inserting his fingers into the private parts of two girls, aged seven and 11, who are his tenant’s daughters. The offences were committed between January and June 2021 at Shagari Estate, Ipaja, Lagos.

During the trial, four witnesses, including the survivors, their mother, and the investigating police officer, testified against Ambrose. The prosecutor, Mrs Olufunke Adegoke, presented five exhibits as evidence. Ambrose testified for himself, but Justice Soladoye determined that the prosecution had proven the charges beyond reasonable doubt.

In her judgment, Justice Soladoye described Ambrose as a “dirty old man” who took advantage of the survivors under the guise of helping them with their schoolwork. The court noted that the survivors’ testimonies exposed Ambrose as a liar, and his defense lacked credibility.

Justice Soladoye also praised the credibility of the prosecution witnesses, stating that the survivors’ evidence was corroborated by their mother and the investigating police officer. She sentenced Ambrose to life imprisonment for counts one and two and three years each for counts three and four. Additionally, she ordered that Ambrose’s name be added to the Sexual Offences Register maintained by the Lagos State government.

This conviction and sentencing serve as a significant victory in the fight against sexual offenses and the protection of minors in Lagos State. It sends a strong message that perpetrators of such heinous crimes will face severe consequences for their actions. The judgment also highlights the importance of credible witness testimony and the thorough investigation of cases to ensure justice is served. The court’s decision provides a sense of closure for the survivors and their family, who can now begin to heal from the traumatic experiences they endured.
