The body of a woman, identified as 48-year-old Daniele Charles, was found naked in the backlands of the Experiment New Housing Scheme in West Coast Berbice. She had been stabbed multiple times. The discovery was made by workers from the Guyana Sugar Corporation who were traveling in a motor lorry along the nearby Estate Road on Sunday, November 19, 2023.
According to reports, Charles had been at a bar in Bath Settlement the previous night, partying with her relatives and two friends. While her relatives left the bar, Charles stayed behind with her friends. Police were called to the area where the body was found on Sunday, but it is unclear who made the call.

Next to the body, a multi-coloured blouse with suspected bloodstains, a pair of 3/4 pants, and undergarments were discovered. The clothing appeared to have been cut open. Region Five police detectives processed the crime scene and collected all items around the body as evidence. A thorough examination of the body revealed six stab wounds to the abdomen, one to the left side breast, two to the throat, and one to the center of the chest.
Charles’s son, Yeukini Charles, told investigators that his mother had called him early Sunday morning, but the call ended abruptly. When he tried calling her back, he only reached her voicemail. Residents of the Experiment New Housing Scheme were unaware of the body until the sugar workers alerted them. Some residents expressed surprise and wanted to know if the deceased was from their community.
At the Fort Wellington Police Headquarters, several individuals who were said to be relatives and friends of Charles gathered, but they refused to provide information to the media. Charles worked as a labourer for the Drainage and Irrigation Department at a Neighbourhood Democratic Council. Her body is currently at the Bailey’s Funeral Parlour awaiting an autopsy. The police have arrested two individuals as part of their ongoing investigation.
