Tragic Accident Claims Woman and Infant’s Lives in Bengaluru

A horrifying incident occurred in Bengaluru’s Whitefield area on Sunday, resulting in the death of a 23-year-old woman, Soundarya, and her nine-month-old daughter, Suviksha. The accident took place around 6 am near the Hope Farm Junction in the Kadugodi area.

According to reports, Soundarya accidentally stepped on a live wire belonging to the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM). The wire, connected to the F9 feeder, had experienced a jump cut, which is an abrupt interference in the power supply. Normally, this should trigger an automatic tripping mechanism to ensure safety by disconnecting power during faults or anomalies in the system.

Protective devices such as circuit breakers or relays are designed to quickly isolate faulty sections and prevent extensive damage. However, in this case, despite the automated tripping mechanism being activated, a loose wire fell on the footpath, unbeknownst to BESCOM.

Shockingly, power supply was restored without checking for faulty wires or other issues because no complaints were raised by consumers in the area. This negligence proved fatal for Soundarya and her daughter.

An FIR has been registered against five BESCOM officials at the Kadugodi police station under IPC section 304A (causing death by negligence). The officials are executive engineer Sriram, assistant engineers Subramanya and Chetan, joint engineer Rajanna, and station operator Manjunath.

Karnataka’s Energy minister, KJ George, has initiated an inquiry into the incident and is awaiting the report. He stated that the lineman, assistant engineer, and assistant executive engineer have been suspended for dereliction of duty. Further action will be taken against anyone found responsible for the incident.

The Energy minister has also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each for the families of the victims.

Meanwhile, the BJP unit in the state has criticized the ruling Congress government, holding them directly responsible for the tragedy. They claimed that the incident occurred due to BESCOM’s failure to clear the fallen power line.

This incident highlights the need for strict adherence to safety protocols and regular maintenance of power distribution networks to prevent such tragic accidents from occurring in the future.
