Javier Milei: The Unconventional President-elect and his Four-Legged Strategists

A clear majority of voters in Argentina have chosen to take a different path by electing Javier Milei as the country’s next president. Milei, a right-wing populist, won the run-off vote on Sunday, defeating incumbent economy minister Sergio Massa with over 55% of the votes. This is the highest percentage a presidential candidate has received since Argentina’s return to democracy in 1983.

Throughout his campaign, the 53-year-old lawmaker, who identifies as a libertarian and “anarcho-capitalist,” proposed radical economic reforms such as slashing public spending, eliminating the central bank, and adopting the US dollar as the nation’s currency. He also opposed sex education in schools, promised to restrict access to abortion, and dismissed climate science as a socialist conspiracy.

However, Milei became more known for his eccentric behavior rather than his policy proposals. A former rock musician and prolific economist, he grabbed attention by wielding a chainsaw on stage and smashing a piñata on air to symbolize his plans. He also made controversial remarks, calling Pope Francis a “filthy leftist” and praising American gangster Al Capone as a “hero.”

Critics have questioned Milei’s competence to govern due to his outlandish behavior and bizarre statements. Nevertheless, political observers argue that his election reflects a frustration with the status quo rather than a wholehearted support for him. According to local political consultant Lucas Romero, it is a “triumph that is less due to Milei and his peculiarities and more to the demand for change.”

One aspect that has raised concerns about Milei’s mental acuity and ability to lead is his reliance on advice from Conan, Murray, Milton, Robert, and Lucas. However, these individuals are not people but his five dogs. Milei considers them his “best strategists” and has credited his late English mastiff, Conan, with inspiring him to run for president. In 2018, Milei paid around $50,000 to clone Conan, resulting in five puppies. He consults his dogs on various matters, including his campaign and policy decisions.

While Milei’s unconventional approach has sparked both ridicule and alarm, he remains unapologetic. When questioned about his canine cabinet, he proudly declared that his dogs are the best strategic committee in the world. Despite concerns about his stability, Milei’s victory signifies a desire for change in Argentina’s political landscape.
