By | November 20, 2023

The body of a man found in a desert area in northwest Arizona over 27 years ago has finally been identified. Mohave County Sheriff’s officials announced on Tuesday that the remains of a man, estimated to be between 30 and 40 years old, were discovered near Kingman in January 1996. The remains were found by two men who were walking their dogs and searching for rocks. The man has now been identified as Sherman George from the Los Angeles area.

According to DNASolves, George died from a gunshot wound to the head and was buried in a shallow grave. Authorities suspect that he may have been a victim of homicide. Despite numerous attempts over the years to identify the man, his identity remained a mystery. It wasn’t until February of this year, when a DNA sample was sent to Othram, a forensic research company based in Texas, that scientists were able to identify the man as George.

Sheriff’s officials revealed that George was an Army veteran who frequently visited the deserts of California and Arizona with his military friends before his death. He was estranged from his family, who last saw him in late 1994, and he had never been reported missing.

Records show that George was stationed at Fort Liberty, North Carolina (formerly Fort Bragg), during his time in the Army. The identification of George’s remains brings closure to a case that has remained unsolved for nearly three decades.

The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office Detective Division is urging anyone with information about the case to come forward. The identification of George’s remains highlights the importance of advanced DNA testing and forensic research in solving cold cases and providing closure to families of the missing.
