Worker Sahaya Thangaraj Killed in Oil Tanker Fire at Chennai Port, Three Others Injured

A tragic incident occurred at Chennai Port on Friday, resulting in the death of one worker and injuries to three others. The deceased has been identified as Sahaya Thangaraj, a 45-year-old resident of Tondiarpet. The injured individuals, Joshua (24), Rajesh (35), and Pushpalingam (48), all hail from Tondiarpet as well and are currently receiving medical treatment at Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital.

The ill-fated incident took place on an oil tanker that had anchored at the port for repair work since October 30. According to police sources, the workers were using a gas cutter to conduct repairs near the vessel’s engine. Tragically, sparks from the gas cutter accidentally fell on a pipeline, leading to a sudden and devastating fire.

As a result of the fire, Sahaya Thangaraj lost his life, while Joshua, Rajesh, and Pushpalingam suffered injuries. The authorities have registered a case and the Harbour Police are currently investigating the incident to determine the exact cause and any potential negligence.

This incident serves as a tragic reminder of the dangers and risks that workers face in hazardous environments. The port authorities and concerned agencies must ensure that all necessary safety measures are in place to prevent such accidents in the future.
