Tragic Head-On Collision Claims Lives of Zapata First Responders

HEBBRONVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Two Zapata first responders tragically lost their lives in a head-on collision with an ambulance in Hebbronville on Wednesday. The accident occurred on State Highway 16 at 5 a.m., prompting the Department of Public Safety to respond to the scene.

The crash involved a white 2016 GMC Sierra and a 2016 Chevrolet Victorious Care Ambulance. The driver of the GMC Sierra, Jaime Barrera Jr., a 27-year-old from Roma, was identified as one of the individuals involved.

The ambulance driver was identified as Andres Botello, a 66-year-old from Zapata. Accompanying Botello was his passenger, Jose Guadalupe Cepeda Lara, a 23-year-old also from Zapata.

Initial investigations conducted by the Department of Public Safety revealed that Barrera was traveling west while the ambulance was heading east on State Highway 16. Barrera, however, failed to stay in his designated lane and veered into the eastbound lane, resulting in a tragic head-on collision with the ambulance.

Regrettably, all three individuals involved in the accident lost their lives at the scene. The collision serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that emergency responders face while on duty.

Local authorities are continuing their investigations to determine the exact cause of the crash and if any additional factors contributed to the tragic incident.
