HEBBRONVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Two Zapata first responders lost their lives in a tragic head-on collision with an ambulance in Hebbronville on Wednesday. The Department of Public Safety received a notification about the crash at 5 a.m. on State Highway 16.
The vehicles involved in the accident were a white 2016 GMC Sierra and a 2016 Chevrolet, Victorious Care Ambulance. The driver of the GMC Sierra, identified as 27-year-old Jaime Barrera Jr. from Roma, collided with the ambulance. The ambulance driver, Andres Botello, a 66-year-old from Zapata, was accompanied by his passenger, 23-year-old Jose Guadalupe Cepeda Lara, also from Zapata.

Preliminary investigations conducted by DPS revealed that Barrera was traveling west, while the ambulance was heading east on State Highway 16. It was determined that Barrera failed to stay in his lane and crossed over into the eastbound lane, resulting in a devastating head-on collision with the ambulance.
Tragically, all three individuals involved in the crash lost their lives at the scene. The collision has left the community grieving the loss of two dedicated first responders.
