A man and his 11-year-old son were fatally shot in a targeted attack in Edmonton on Thursday. The man, identified as Harpreet Uppal, was well-known to the police and had connections to the gang and drug world. The shooting took place in a shopping center parking lot off Ellerslie Road at 50th Street. The Edmonton Police Service revealed that Uppal was previously targeted in a shooting at a Royal Pizza restaurant in October 2021. In that incident, a suspect fired shots at the restaurant, causing the family inside to take cover. Although charges against a 26-year-old man related to that incident were dropped, the police did not confirm if he was a suspect in Thursday’s shooting.
While it is clear that Uppal was targeted, the police are still investigating the motive behind the killing of his 11-year-old son. Acting Superintendent Colin Derksen stated that they believe Uppal was followed and targeted with the intention of ending his life. However, they are unsure if the intention was also to kill the young boy. Derksen emphasized that the boy was deliberately killed and was not caught in the crossfire or a victim of mistaken identity.

The police have not released the name of Uppal’s son at this time. Derksen expressed his dismay at the recent rise in sick and twisted instances of organized crime. He explained that organized crime has evolved and incidents like Thursday’s shooting highlight the disturbing nature of these activities.
Furthermore, the police confirmed that there was another boy present with the father and son during the shooting. Fortunately, this boy, who is around the same age as the 11-year-old victim, was unharmed as he remained inside the vehicle. The investigation into the targeted shooting is ongoing, and the police are appealing for any information that could assist in identifying the perpetrators and understanding the motive behind this tragic incident.
