A known gang member was fatally shot outside a fast-food restaurant in Edmonton, Canada, on Thursday, with his 11-year-old son also being deliberately killed in the attack, according to police. The victim was identified as 41-year-old Harpreet Uppal, who was well-known to the police and involved in the gang drug world. Authorities had previously attempted to help Uppal leave his criminal lifestyle and ensure the safety of him and his family. Two years ago, there had been another attempt on his life at a pizza restaurant.

The police are currently investigating possible connections between the shooting and a burned-out SUV found nearby, although the vehicle was unoccupied. Derksen mentioned that gang violence in public places has been on the rise in Edmonton in recent years. So far this year, there have been 196 shootings, a 46% increase compared to the same period last year. Although these shootings are typically gang-related, they pose a significant risk to innocent bystanders.
Derksen emphasized the danger of such incidents occurring near public areas, noting that Thursday’s shooting took place near a daycare. Despite the tragic event, no arrests have been made yet. The police are working to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
