A gang member and his 11-year-old son were tragically shot and killed outside a fast-food restaurant in Edmonton, according to police. The incident occurred on Thursday when the victims were sitting inside their car. Acting Supt. Colin Derksen revealed that the young boy was deliberately targeted, while another child who was with them managed to escape unharmed. The two boys had briefly gone inside the restaurant before the shooting took place.
The police officer described the lunchtime incident as a disturbing example of the escalating gang violence in the city. Derksen expressed concern over the lack of regard for children and innocent citizens among gang members. The deceased man was identified as Harpreet Uppal, a 41-year-old individual well-known to the authorities for his involvement in the drug world. The police had previously attempted to help Uppal leave his criminal lifestyle and protect his family.

Derksen mentioned that there had been previous attempts on Uppal’s life, including a shooting incident in a pizza restaurant two years ago. Although a suspect was arrested in that case, the charges against him were recently dropped. The motive behind the shooting is currently unclear, but Derksen stated that it was targeted and intentional.
The incident took place in a busy shopping plaza, but by the following day, the area had returned to normal. A teddy bear and a few flowers were left as a memorial near the scene of the crime. Police are investigating a possible connection between the shooting and a stolen, burned-out SUV found nearby.
Derksen emphasized the increasing gang violence in Edmonton, citing a 46% rise in shootings compared to the previous year. He expressed gratitude that no additional deaths or injuries occurred during the incident. While no arrests have been made yet, officers are interviewing witnesses and gathering information. Uppal’s family is also cooperating with the police.
The tragic incident has shocked the community, and authorities are working diligently to bring those responsible to justice.
