Auckland police have had a busy and tragic week as they searched for the person or persons responsible for the brutal killing of a man in his Ellerslie home, while also looking for any signs of his missing wife. On Friday morning, their search came to a tragic end when a woman’s body was discovered in the North Shore suburb of Greenhithe. Later that afternoon, a man appeared in court charged with the murders of Fuk-Fu Joseph Kwok and his wife, Mei Han Chong.

The week began with the discovery of Kwok’s body at his home on Monday evening. Police initially treated his death as unexplained and appealed for sightings of the couple’s blue Kia Rio, which was last seen at the property. Chong was also reported missing, and police appealed for sightings of her while keeping an open mind about her involvement in her husband’s killing.

On Wednesday, a homicide investigation was launched into Kwok’s death, and a post-mortem confirmed that his injuries were consistent with foul play. Police renewed their plea to the public for assistance in locating Chong and the car, expressing grave concerns for her safety and wellbeing.

By Thursday, Kwok was formally identified as the homicide victim, and police released the first photo of Chong, stating that they believed she had also fallen victim to foul play. Investigations revealed that Chong did not drive, suggesting that someone had taken her and the couple’s Kia against her will.

On Friday, Chong’s body was discovered in Greenhithe, and police located the Kia Rio with different number plates outside an unrelated address in Glenfield. A 42-year-old man was arrested in Hamilton and charged with two counts of murder.

The accused, whose name is suppressed, appeared in court and was remanded in custody. The investigation is ongoing, and police have not ruled out further charges. Meanwhile, the community mourns the loss of Kwok, who was a registered nurse at North Shore Hospital. Te Whatu Ora released a statement expressing their condolences and offering support to his coworkers.
