70-Year-Old Larry Simonsen Dies in Apparent Natural Causes After Car Crash in Crystal Lake

A 70-year-old man has died from natural causes after his car crashed into trees and a fence in Crystal Lake. The incident occurred on October 28th, when the Crystal Lake Police Department and Crystal Lake Fire-Rescue Department responded to a vehicle crash on St Andrews Lane and Greenbrier Terrace.

According to a police report obtained by Lake and McHenry County Scanner, a 911 caller reported that passersby had stopped and started performing CPR on the unconscious and unresponsive driver. Paramedics arrived at the scene and took over lifesaving measures on the victim, identified as Larry Simonsen, a 70-year-old resident of Crystal Lake. However, Simonsen was pronounced dead after being transported to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in Huntley.

Simonsen was driving a 2023 Honda Accord when the accident occurred. His car veered off the roadway, crashing into bushes, a fence, and trees. Although the car’s airbags had deployed, no visible signs of trauma were observed on Simonsen.

The McHenry County Coroner’s Office determined that Simonsen’s death was a result of natural causes. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle, and no other cars were involved in the crash.

Simonsen was a longtime Crystal Lake resident and leaves behind his wife of 48 years and one child, according to his obituary. He had worked in the automotive collision and restoration industry until his retirement in December 2019. Simonsen was described as an avid golfer and a lover of race cars, enjoying both watching and building them. His obituary also mentioned his fondness for cheese and sausage pizza and racetrack hot dogs.
