28-Year-Old Nancy Lopez Pronounced Deceased at the Scene of Deadly Crash in Wichita, 16-Year-Old Arrested on Murder Charges

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Police in Wichita are investigating a fatal crash that occurred at the intersection of E. 23rd St N and Jackson on Wednesday afternoon. First responders were called to the scene just before 3 p.m., where they found two severely damaged vehicles.

According to Officer Kris Gupilan, a preliminary investigation revealed that a northbound Acura MDX collided with an eastbound Nissan Altima at the intersection. The Nissan was occupied by Nancy Lopez, a 28-year-old woman from Wichita, and a 23-year-old female passenger.

Despite the efforts of the Wichita Fire Department and Sedgwick County EMS, Lopez tragically lost her life at the scene. The 23-year-old passenger was rushed to a local hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

The occupants of the Acura sustained minor injuries. The driver, a 16-year-old boy from Wichita, was arrested and taken to the Sedgwick County Juvenile Intake Center. He faces charges of reckless second-degree murder and reckless aggravated battery. The police believe that excessive speed played a significant role in the collision.

Authorities will present the case to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office for formal charging. This incident marks the 31st traffic fatality in Wichita this year.

Law enforcement agencies are urging drivers to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent further accidents. The tragic consequences of this crash serve as a reminder for all motorists to prioritize safety on the roads.
