The tragedy unfolded on October 16 when Sonali Shankar Mohite, aged 34, passed away at a local hospital in Alibaug due to food poisoning symptoms. Her brother Ganesh claimed her body, and within a day, his second sister, Sneha Shankar Mohite, aged 30, also fell ill and was admitted to the same hospital. However, Sneha’s condition worsened rapidly, and she was later transferred to MGM Hospital in Panvel, where she tragically succumbed to the poisoning on October 20.

Before her demise, Sneha revealed to the authorities that her brother had prepared a soup for her and Sonali on October 15. Their mother, unaware of the sinister intentions, served them water in a copper glass. The mother believed that her relatives, residing nearby, might have tampered with the water supply due to the ongoing property dispute.

This revelation prompted the police to register a murder case and launch a thorough investigation into the matter. During their inquiries, the police discovered that Ganesh had been involved in fraudulent activities, such as forging signatures and transferring property ownership without his sisters’ and mother’s consent. Additionally, they unearthed complaints made by the victims and their mother against Ganesh to both the police and the forest department.

Further probing revealed that Ganesh had promised his sisters and mother equal distribution of property and compensation if they provided him with a no objection certificate for his job in the Forest Department. However, he failed to fulfill his promises, which led to constant disputes and demands from his sisters to divide the property.

The police found a rat poison bottle wrapper in Ganesh’s car’s boot, adding weight to their case against him.

As a result of the evidence gathered, Ganesh Mohite has been arrested and is currently in police custody. The court has remanded him until October 25. This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the dark consequences that can arise from unresolved family disputes and the importance of seeking peaceful resolutions..
