A shocking incident unfolded on February 24 in Fairfax County, Virginia, when a 23-year-old au pair from Brazil, Juliana Peres Magalhaes, was arrested and charged in connection to a homicide at a family’s home. The arrest came after a nearly seven-month-long investigation that is still ongoing, according to Fairfax County Police Lt. Erin Weeks.

Peres Magalhaes stands accused of fatally shooting 39-year-old Joseph Ryan at the Fairfax County home. Another victim, Christine Banfield, 37, was also found in the residence with stab wounds to her upper body. Tragically, Banfield later succumbed to her injuries at a hospital. The investigation into Banfield’s death is still ongoing, and while police have not identified a suspect, they have confirmed that all parties involved in the incident have been accounted for, and there is no ongoing threat to the community.
During a news conference, Lt. Weeks emphasized that the investigation is very active and that all options remain open. The police are continuing to interview individuals, review digital and forensic evidence, and work towards understanding the circumstances surrounding Banfield’s fatal stabbing.
The incident unfolded in a highly distressing manner. Just after 8 a.m. on February 24, Fairfax County Police officers responded to a 911 call from Peres Magalhaes, who reported that her friend had been injured. Another individual, later identified as Banfield’s husband, stated on the call that he had shot an unknown male who had entered their home and stabbed his wife.
Upon arriving at the scene, the police discovered a horrific scene. Banfield was found in an upstairs bedroom with multiple stab wounds, while Ryan was found nearby with gunshot wounds. Banfield’s four-year-old daughter was present in the house during the incident but was unharmed.

Further investigation revealed that there was no forced entry into the Banfield residence and that Banfield’s husband was outside the home when the murders occurred.
