The focus of this month’s spotlight is a case involving unidentified human remains. The incident took place on Friday, March 8, 2013, when members of a work crew were clearing land near the 10300 block of Brightman Boulevard, close to the dead end of St. Johns Bluff Road South. While clearing debris, they stumbled upon a human skull in an area that was recently wooded. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office’s Homicide Team 4 responded to the scene and secured it for forensic excavation. Further exploration of the area the following day led to the discovery of the majority of the remaining skeletal remains. It was evident that the remains had been in the woods for an extended period.

The victim, determined to be a male, was found wearing a black Nike hat, black t-shirt, black sweatpants, and white and black Nike shoes at the time of his death. After an autopsy and an extensive investigation by the Medical Examiner’s Office, it was determined that the victim had suffered trauma to the head/skull, leading to the case being classified as a homicide.

Despite the efforts made, the victim’s identity, race, and age remain unknown. However, the Medical Examiner’s Office was able to provide sketches of what the victim may have looked like at the time of his death. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone with information about the victim’s identity or any details related to this case to come forward. They can contact the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office directly or remain anonymous and be eligible for a reward by contacting First Coast Crime Stoppers.

The release of this “Cold Case Spotlight” serves as a reminder that justice can still be sought for victims of unsolved crimes, and that the cooperation and help of the public play a crucial role in solving such cases..
