“Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Seeks Help in Identifying Human Remains Found in Southside Woods”

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is seeking help to identify human remains found in the woods on the Southside. The remains were discovered in 2013 and the victim’s identity, race, and age have yet to be determined. The death has been ruled a homicide.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s help in identifying human remains that were found in the woods on the Southside. As part of their Cold Case Spotlight campaign, the Sheriff’s Office is releasing information about the case in the hopes of generating leads and bringing closure to the victim’s loved ones.

The remains were discovered in the afternoon hours of March 8, 2013, by a work crew clearing land near Brightman Boulevard. A human skull was found near the dead end of St. Johns Bluff Road South, not far from the University of North Florida. Homicide detectives secured the site for forensic excavation, and a subsequent search turned up the majority of the remaining skeletal remains.

Investigators believe that the remains had been in the woods for an extended period of time. An autopsy revealed that the victim, a male, had suffered trauma to the head or skull, leading the Medical Examiner to rule the death a homicide. However, the identity, race, and age of the victim have yet to be determined.

To aid in the identification process, the Medical Examiner provided sketches of what the victim may have looked like at the time of his death. The victim was described as wearing a black Nike hat, black T-shirt, black sweatpants, and white and black Nike shoes.
