Epstein and his fiancée, Irene Shavit, had sought refuge in his apartment’s safe house when the attack occurred. Epstein’s mother received a text message from her son describing the situation. He mentioned hearing shouts in Arabic and the presence of shooting. The next message he sent simply stated, “They’re here, Mom.”

The attack, carried out by Hamas militants, was part of a co-ordinated effort to launch rockets from Gaza into Israel. The threat of rockets was not uncommon for residents of Kfar Aza Kibbutz, a farming community in southern Israel. However, they were unaware that armed attackers had stormed blockaded areas of the Gaza Strip, targeting Israeli civilians.

Epstein’s mother, Ayelet Shachar-Epstein, shared that her son was a kind-hearted individual who loved soccer and volunteered with youth with special needs. After completing his mandatory service in the Israeli Defense Forces, the family felt relieved that he was safe. However, tragedy struck when Epstein sacrificed his life to save his fiancée.

Shachar-Epstein reminisced about a recent family trip to France, where they hiked in Mont Blanc. She believes that this trip was a farewell present from her son. She described the trip as full of laughter, songs, and precious moments that she will cherish forever.
