Emerita Professor Jane Taylor, a highly esteemed scholar and colleague, passed away on September 6, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of extraordinary contributions to the field of humanities. The Centre for Humanities Research (CHR) expresses deep sadness at her untimely demise.

Born on January 12, 1954, in Cape Town, South Africa, Professor Taylor had a profound passion for the arts and academia from an early age. She pursued her education with dedication and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the University of Cape Town. Recognized for her exceptional talent and commitment to her craft, she continued her studies, completing a Master’s degree in English Literature at the same institution. Professor Taylor’s thirst for knowledge and exploration led her to further her academic pursuits at prestigious universities abroad, including Yale and Oxford, where she obtained her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature.

Returning to her home country, Professor Taylor joined the University of the Western Cape as a faculty member in the late 1980s. Her academic career was marked by numerous achievements and accolades, establishing her as a prominent figure in the field of humanities. She dedicated her life to the pursuit of knowledge and the advancement of critical thinking, inspiring generations of students and fellow researchers through her insightful teachings and groundbreaking research.

Despite the profound impact she made on the academic community, the cause of Professor Taylor’s death remains unknown. The circumstances surrounding her passing have not been disclosed, leaving friends, colleagues, and students in a state of shock and mourning. The CHR, in collaboration with the Greatmore Humanities Hub, has organized a memorial event to celebrate Professor Taylor’s remarkable contributions. The gathering will take place on October 13 at the Greatmore Humanities Hub, where friends, family, and colleagues will come together to honor her memory and reflect upon her intellectual legacy.
