Passing of Shri. M.S. Swaminathan Garu, Pioneer of India’s Green Revolution, Leaves a Lasting Agricultural Legacy

Vijayasai Reddy V, a member of parliament, expressed his sadness over the death of Shri. M.S. Swaminathan Garu, who was known as the main architect behind India’s Green Revolution. Reddy stated that the Andhra Pradesh government will continue to work on Swaminathan’s pro-farmer ideas.

Renowned agricultural scientist and the “Father of the Green Revolution” in India, Shri M.S. Swaminathan, has passed away at the age of 97. The news of his demise has left the nation in mourning as it reflects on his immense contributions to India’s agricultural sector. As per the tweet by Vijayasai Reddy V, a Member of Parliament, Swaminathan’s efforts in pioneering the Green Revolution will forever be cherished.

Born in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, on August 7, 1925, Swaminathan’s journey as a scientist began with his education at the Loyola College and Presidency College in Chennai. Later, he pursued his Ph.D. in genetics at the University of Cambridge, England. Throughout his illustrious career, he held numerous prestigious positions, including Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Principal Secretary of the Indian Ministry of Agriculture, and Chairman of the National Commission on Farmers.

Swaminathan’s most significant contribution to India’s agricultural landscape came in the form of the Green Revolution.
