Born on August 7, 1925, in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, Shri Mankombu Sambasivan Swaminathan was an eminent Indian geneticist and agronomist. He dedicated his life to improving agricultural practices and ensuring food security in India. His visionary work revolutionized farming techniques, enabling increased food production and transforming India from a food-deficient nation to a self-sufficient one.
After completing his education in India, Shri Swaminathan pursued further studies in plant breeding and genetics at the University of Cambridge and the University of Wisconsin. He gained global recognition for his groundbreaking research on wheat genetics, which played a pivotal role in India’s Green Revolution during the 1960s and 1970s.
Over the course of his illustrious career, Shri Swaminathan held several key positions, including Director-General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). He also served as the President of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) and was a member of the United Nations Advisory Committee on Science and Technology.
Shri M. S. Swaminathan’s tireless efforts in promoting sustainable agriculture, conservation of biodiversity, and rural development earned him numerous accolades and honors. He was bestowed with the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan, India’s highest civilian awards. The United Nations honored him with the first-ever World Food Prize in 1987.
