Dr. Constance E. Clayton, a trailblazer and advocate for education, has passed away at the age of 89. As the first Black and first female superintendent of Philadelphia’s public schools, Dr. Clayton dedicated her life to the betterment of the city’s children.
Born in Philadelphia in 1933, Dr. Clayton was raised in a close-knit community that valued education. She excelled academically and earned a scholarship to Pennsylvania State University, where she completed her undergraduate studies. Driven by her passion for education, she went on to earn a master’s degree from Temple University and a doctorate in education administration from the University of Pennsylvania.

In 1982, Dr. Clayton made history when she was appointed as the superintendent of the School District of Philadelphia, becoming the first Black person and the first woman to hold this position.
