The victim, identified as 21-year-old Wes Smith, was a junior at Texas Christian University (TCU) and was shot three times outside a bar in Fort Worth early Friday morning.

The incident occurred around 1:00 am outside a bar called Your Mom’s House when Smith was approached by a stranger. Without any apparent provocation, the assailant shot Smith once in the stomach, then the shoulder, and finally in the back of the head. The shooter quickly fled the scene, injuring another witness by striking them in the head with the gun.

Smith was rushed to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries only 40 minutes later. The loss of the promising young student has left the community in shock and mourning.

Police were able to apprehend the suspect, identified as 21-year-old Matthew Purdy Jr., just 0.2 miles from the crime scene. In a shocking revelation, Purdy admitted to approaching Smith, whom he did not know, and shooting him three times. He even confessed that he shot Smith in the back of the head because he wanted to ensure his victim’s demise. However, Purdy failed to provide a clear motive for the shooting, leaving investigators puzzled. He further revealed that he would have targeted another person if he had not run out of ammunition.

Purdy has since been arrested and charged with first-degree murder. The authorities are working diligently to uncover any possible connections between the suspect and the victim or any other relevant information that could explain the senseless act of violence.
