In a shocking incident that took place late Sunday night, a man in Southwest Memphis was forced to defend himself against a would-be carjacker who approached him at a gas station. The suspect, later identified as 18-year-old Derrion Turner, had allegedly committed a similar crime just three days earlier in Frayser.

According to the victim, who was filling up his 2022 Dodge Charger at the Fill-N-Go on South Third, Turner approached him wearing a black ski mask and pointed a gun at him, demanding his vehicle. However, the victim didn’t back down. He bravely grabbed Turner from behind and engaged in a struggle over the weapon.

During the scuffle, a single shot was fired, hitting the inside of the Charger. The victim managed to disarm Turner and held him down until the police arrived. The incident occurred at pump seven just before midnight, according to a manager at the gas station. Although he didn’t hear the gunshot, he witnessed the aftermath.

The manager expressed his lack of surprise at the young age of the suspect, stating, “They are getting younger and younger.” Turner was subsequently taken into custody and transported to the Violent Crimes Unit of the Memphis Police Department.

Upon further investigation, authorities discovered that Turner admitted to not only attempting to carjack the vehicle at the gas station but also to a carjacking that occurred on August 31 in the 3100 block of Manor Drive. In that incident, Turner approached a woman, along with another armed individual, and stole her 2018 Nissan Rogue, iPhone, and $750.

The victim in the Manor Drive carjacking was able to positively identify Turner as the person who threatened her at gunpoint and fled with her vehicle. As a result, Turner now faces multiple charges, including attempted carjacking, carjacking, aggravated robbery, three counts of employing a firearm during a dangerous felony, and reckless endangerment.

Turner is currently being held on a $40,000 bond and is scheduled to appear before a judge on Tuesday.

This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing issue of carjackings and the importance of remaining vigilant and taking necessary precautions to ensure personal safety. The bravery displayed by the victim in this case highlights the importance of self-defense and the willingness to fight back against criminals.

Authorities are urging anyone with additional information about Turner or any related crimes to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation..
