COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS/Gray News) – A South Carolina deputy is currently hospitalized after a suspect crashed into her vehicle head-on during a pursuit, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

The incident occurred on Sunday when deputies were dispatched to a domestic violence call involving a weapon on Zimalcrest Drive. The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Raqwan L. Williams, fled the scene in a vehicle upon law enforcement’s arrival.

Deputies initiated a short chase in an attempt to stop Williams, who began driving recklessly. During the pursuit, Williams side-swiped a civilian vehicle before intentionally crashing into an RCSD deputy head-on.

The injured deputy, identified as Michelle Burnside, was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment. WIS reports that Williams fled the scene on foot but was apprehended shortly afterward with the assistance of deputies and a K-9 unit.

Authorities recovered two weapons from Williams. Both Burnside and Williams were transported to the hospital to receive medical attention for their injuries.

Williams now faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, assault and battery in the second degree, armed robbery, failure to stop for blue lights causing bodily harm, grand larceny exceeding $10,000, pointing and presenting a firearm, reckless driving, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and unlawful carry.

Shockingly, officials discovered that Williams was already out on bond for murder and other charges prior to the chase. Following his release from the hospital, Williams was transported to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott expressed his frustration, stating, “My deputy would not be in the hospital if he would have been in jail where he belonged. Murder and all his other charges show a total disregard for the law and how dangerous he is to put in the community. I pray our criminal justice system works this time.”

The incident serves as a reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face daily while carrying out their duties to protect and serve the community.
