PALM COAST, Florida (WESH) — The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office is currently conducting an investigation into a tragic incident where a 1-year-old girl was shot in Palm Coast on Sunday night.

Deputies were called to Ranwood Lane at approximately 11:30 p.m. Upon their arrival, they discovered an 18-month-old girl with a gunshot wound to her head. She was immediately rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately, she was pronounced dead.
Authorities have stated that detectives are currently gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses, as they suspect that the shooting may have been accidental. Sheriff Rick Staly, during a news conference, expressed the immense difficulty faced by first responders when dealing with cases involving such young children.
At the time of the incident, eight individuals were present inside the house. As part of the ongoing investigation, the sheriff’s office seized marijuana and a white powdery substance believed to be cocaine or heroin from the premises.
While a person of interest has been identified, the investigation is still ongoing, and officials are actively exploring all possibilities. The person of interest has been identified as 21-year-old C.J. Nelson, who has been arrested for violation of probation.
