3 Killed, Several Others Rescued in Rip Currents at Jersey Shore Beaches

Three swimmers lost their lives and multiple others were rescued from rip currents at Jersey Shore beaches over the weekend. In Beach Haven, a 22-year-old man drowned despite efforts to save him, while in Belmar, a 42-year-old man also died after being pulled from the water. Three individuals have tragically lost their lives, and multiple others were rescued from dangerous rip currents at the Jersey Shore this past weekend. The incidents occurred in different locations, highlighting the widespread threat posed by these treacherous ocean currents.

In Beach Haven, Ocean County, lifeguards formed a human chain to search for a submerged swimmer. While two swimmers were successfully brought to safety, a 22-year-old man, identified as Edwin Antonio Made Sanches from the Dominican Republic, succumbed to the rough waves despite the valiant efforts of the police and EMS. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Meanwhile, in Belmar, authorities received an emergency call regarding a group of distressed swimmers near the 6th Avenue Beach. Thankfully, five swimmers were rescued, but tragically, a 42-year-old male swimmer was found unresponsive. Emergency responders transported him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Later that evening, at Seaside Beach, police were alerted to another incident involving six swimmers in distress near Stockon Avenue. A joint effort involving multiple agencies, including the United States Coast Guard, was launched to locate and rescue the individuals. Fortunately, five of the swimmers were successfully saved, but unfortunately, a 31-year-old male swimmer remains missing despite extensive search efforts by the USCG. The search continued overnight but has since been concluded.

The recent tragedies underscore the importance of understanding and respecting the risks associated with rip currents, especially during periods of rough surf. Rip currents, sometimes referred to as rip tides, are powerful channels of water that flow away from the shore, often catching unsuspecting swimmers off guard.
