Former Director-General of the MKO Abiola campaign Organization in the June 12, 1993, presidential election, Senator Jonathan Silas Zwingina, has sadly passed away at the age of 70. Zwingina played a crucial role as the director general of the ‘Hope ’93’ presidential campaign organization of late Chief Moshood Abiola of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 1993 election that was unfortunately annulled by former military president, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (Retd).

The former lawmaker, who represented Adamawa Southern Senatorial District, breathed his last on Wednesday in Abuja after battling a long illness. Zwingina, a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was elected in 1999 and reelected in April 2003. During his time in office, he served on various Senate Committees, including Works & Housing, Establishment, Internal Affairs, Information, Special Projects, Privatization, and Economic Affairs.

In a sad turn of events, Zwingina’s residence in Abuja was demolished in 2007, allegedly on the orders of former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai. He was a respected figure in Nigerian politics and was among the pioneers of the PDP, along with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Late Wilberforce Bafte Juta, Chief Joel Madaki, Late Solomon Lar, and others.
