Another Elephant Dies at Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar

The Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar is reeling from yet another tragic loss as elephant ‘Abhi’ passed away due to a disease. The heartbreaking incident occurred around 12:30 PM, leaving the zoo authorities and visitors devastated.

Abhi, who was brought to the zoo at just two months old from the Keonjhar Forest Division, had been under careful hand rearing since his arrival in June. His sudden erratic behavior, including loud grunting and repeated sitting and standing, prompted immediate intervention from the zoo staff. Despite their best efforts, Abhi could not be saved.

On September 19, concerns arose when Abhi appeared dull and refused to eat. A high body temperature and subsequent blood test revealed that he was infected with EEHV. The elephant was then closely monitored and treated around the clock near the zoo’s veterinary hospital.

This heartbreaking loss comes on the heels of the death of another elephant, Prema, in 2022, who succumbed to an infection in her left leg. The Nandankanan Zoological Park is known for its conservation efforts and dedication to wildlife health, making each loss a devastating blow to the team and visitors alike.

As the zoo mourns the loss of Abhi, it serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of ongoing efforts to protect and care for these majestic creatures. Our thoughts are with the staff at Nandankanan Zoological Park during this difficult time.

Baby elephant ‘Abhi’ dies at Nandankanan Zoo

When news broke that the baby elephant named Abhi had passed away at the Nandankanan Zoo, animal lovers around the world were devastated. Abhi was a beloved member of the zoo’s elephant family, known for his playful antics and gentle nature. The loss of such a young and vibrant creature has left many people mourning his untimely death.

What led to the tragic demise of this adorable baby elephant? Reports indicate that Abhi had been suffering from a mysterious illness for several weeks before his passing. Zookeepers and veterinarians worked tirelessly to treat him, but unfortunately, their efforts were not enough to save his life. The exact cause of his illness remains unknown, leaving many questions unanswered.

One possible factor that may have contributed to Abhi’s decline is the stress of captivity. Elephants are highly intelligent and social animals that require a large amount of space to roam and interact with others of their kind. Being confined to a zoo enclosure can lead to boredom, depression, and other health issues in these majestic creatures.

Additionally, the quality of care provided to zoo animals can vary greatly from one facility to another. Some zoos prioritize animal welfare above all else, ensuring that their residents receive proper nutrition, medical care, and enrichment activities. Others may cut corners to save money, putting the health and well-being of their animals at risk.

In the case of Nandankanan Zoo, officials have stated that they are conducting a thorough investigation into Abhi’s death to determine what went wrong and how similar tragedies can be prevented in the future. This commitment to transparency and accountability is crucial in ensuring the safety and happiness of all the animals under the zoo’s care.

As we mourn the loss of Abhi, let us also take this opportunity to reflect on the importance of responsible animal stewardship. By supporting ethical zoos and wildlife conservation efforts, we can help protect endangered species like elephants and ensure a brighter future for all creatures great and small.
