Remembering Edward H. “Paw Paw Ed” Hughes: A WWII and Korean War Veteran

Edward H. “Paw Paw Ed” Hughes, a former mayor of Slaughter and a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War, passed away at the age of 95 at his Slaughter home on September 20. He leaves behind a legacy of service and dedication to his community.

Born in Kentwood to Elmer and Fannie Mae Alford Hughes, he bravely served in the U.S. Navy during two of the most significant wars in modern history. In 1950, he married Barbara Wall, and together they raised six children. The family eventually settled in Slaughter, where Hughes established Hughes Garage, later expanding it to become Hughes Texaco.

During the gasoline shortage of the 1970s, Hughes and his family transformed the service station into a convenience store that offered a variety of goods, including gasoline, groceries, fried chicken, and his famous homemade hamburgers. He eventually retired in 2017 after many years of hard work at Paw Paw’s Store.

Besides his successful business ventures, Hughes also dedicated over 25 years of his life to serving as the mayor of Slaughter. Additionally, he was a respected member and former deacon of Slaughter First Baptist Church.

A visitation will be held at Slaughter First Baptist on Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., followed by religious services led by the Rev. Basil Wicker. The interment will take place at Alford Cemetery in Kentwood.

Edward H. “Paw Paw Ed” Hughes will be remembered for his selfless service to his country, his community, and his family. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
