Accident – Death – Obituary News :

The Tragic Incident in Carson

Last week, attorneys for the family of a 34-year-old homeless man who was fatally shot by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the county. The incident took place outside a gas station in Carson, a city located in Los Angeles County.

Excessive Use of Force

The lawsuit alleges that deputies used excessive force when they shot Arturo Cernas four times in the back. It also claims that the deputies failed to render aid immediately and did not use proper tactics to de-escalate the situation. This tragic incident has raised questions about law enforcement practices in the area.

Deputies’ Response

The Sheriff’s Department, which released audio and video recordings of the incident, stated that deputies from the Carson station were dispatched to the gas station after an employee reported a man screaming and walking around the premises. Upon arriving, deputies encountered Cernas, who was standing by the entrance of the gas station’s market.

Body-Worn Camera Footage

Video from the body-worn camera of a deputy captured the interaction between the deputies and Cernas. The footage shows deputies approaching Cernas, questioning him, and eventually noticing a handgun in his pocket. Despite warnings from the deputies, Cernas reached into his backpack and pulled out what appeared to be a weapon, which turned out to be a BB gun.

Tragic Outcome

Unfortunately, the situation escalated, leading to deputies firing their weapons at Cernas, resulting in his death. An autopsy report revealed that Cernas was shot four times in the back, causing severe injuries. The family’s lawsuit accuses the deputies of failing to follow proper de-escalation tactics and of being indifferent to Cernas’ mental health condition.

Seeking Justice

Beatriz Loera, Cernas’ mother, and his three children are seeking justice for the wrongful death of their loved one. The family is demanding monetary damages for the loss they have suffered. This incident has sparked outrage in the community and calls for accountability in law enforcement practices.
