Accident – Death – Obituary News :

The Arrest of Stephens County Man in Athens

A young man from Stephens County, identified as a member of a street gang by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, was apprehended in Athens on charges related to a shooting incident in Toccoa. Cornelius Devaughn Curry, aged 20, was taken into custody on April 18 on multiple counts, including aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during a crime, aggravated battery, and violating the state’s gang prevention act.

According to the GBI, Curry was accused of shooting two individuals during a drive-by incident that took place on West Whitmire Street in Toccoa. The shooting occurred in the early hours of March 31, leaving both victims with injuries to their torso. Fortunately, both individuals were treated and discharged from the hospital following the attack.

The Investigation and Arrest

Following the shooting in Toccoa, local authorities sought assistance from the GBI’s Gang Task Force to track down the suspect. The investigation led authorities to a duplex residence on Vintage Court in Athens, situated in a neighbourhood off Cedar Shoals Drive. With the help of Athens-Clarke police, a search warrant was executed at the residence prior to Curry’s arrest.

Although the GBI charged Curry with violating the gang prevention act, they did not specify the specific gang he is allegedly affiliated with. Notably, certain gangs, such as the Gangster Disciples, have known members in both Athens and Toccoa.

Further Developments and Future Arrests

At present, Curry is being held at the Stephens County Jail without bond. The GBI has hinted at the possibility of additional arrests as the investigation progresses. Despite the search and arrest in Athens, local authorities have not filed any charges against Curry in relation to the incident.

As the case unfolds, the community awaits further updates on the outcome of the investigation and the involvement of other individuals in the alleged gang-related shooting incident in Toccoa.
