SINGAPORE: The entire community is in mourning following the tragic passing of 17-year-old Afifah Munirah Binte Muhammad Azril, a first-year student at Temasek Junior College, in a multi-vehicle crash in Tampines on Monday morning. The loss of Afifah has deeply impacted her family, schoolmates, and all those who knew her.

Details of the Accident

The fatal accident occurred at the junction of Tampines Avenue 1 and Tampines Avenue 4 at 7:07 am on Monday, resulting in the hospitalization of eight individuals, including two 11-year-olds. Tragically, both Afifah and another victim lost their lives after succumbing to their injuries in the hospital.

Confirming Afifah’s passing, her uncle, Mr Firdaus Kassim, also shared that Afifah’s father, who was also involved in the accident, underwent surgery and is currently receiving medical care.

Afifah’s School and Achievements

Afifah, a first-year student at Temasek JC, was known for her academic excellence and was cherished by her family. She was described as a bright and promising student by her teachers and peers. Afifah’s passing has left a void in the school community, with Principal Liu Earnler expressing deep sorrow over the loss.

Prior to attending Temasek JC, Afifah served as the head prefect at Meridian Primary School in Pasir Ris and received numerous awards for her leadership and service. Cedar Girls’ Secondary School, where Afifah graduated from, remembered her as an outstanding student and esteemed leader in the Girl Guides community.

Following the news of Afifah’s passing, many netizens expressed their sadness and offered condolences to her family. There have also been calls for authorities to investigate the accident thoroughly and impose stricter penalties on reckless drivers.

Police are currently investigating the accident, with dashcam footage revealing the sequence of events leading up to the collision. The footage showed the reckless driving behaviour of the 42-year-old male driver who is assisting with the investigation.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force and members of the public played a crucial role in assisting the injured individuals at the scene of the accident, highlighting the community’s spirit in times of need.
