In a distressing incident that has shocked the community, a 28-year-old woman was reportedly raped and coerced into converting to Islam by a man in front of his wife. The woman, whose identity has been kept confidential, revealed that she was threatened with the release of explicit photos unless she complied with the man’s demands. Additionally, she alleged that she was forced to remove the traditional ‘Kumkum’ from her forehead and wear a burkha.
Police Investigation and Legal Action
Following the woman’s harrowing ordeal, the local police have taken swift action by filing a case against seven individuals, including the man identified as Rafik and his wife. According to the First Information Report (FIR), the couple lured the woman into a deceitful relationship, engaged in sexual acts with her, and subsequently used intimate photographs to blackmail her into converting to Islam. The victim also claimed that she was coerced into divorcing her husband under threats of public humiliation and harm.
Threats and Intimidation
The woman further disclosed that Rafik had compelled her to abandon her previous life and adhere to his commands upon moving into their residence in Belagavi. She alleged facing derogatory remarks based on her caste and relentless pressure to renounce her faith due to her belonging to a backward community, as per a report by India Today.
Legal Ramifications and Charges
The police have taken a stringent stance by lodging an FIR under multiple sections of the law, including the Karnataka Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Act, relevant IT regulations, the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, and the Indian Penal Code. The charges encompass serious offenses such as rape, kidnapping, wrongful confinement, and criminal intimidation.
