Tragic Hit-and-Run Incident Unfolds in Knoxville, Tennessee

Back in May of 1993, a tragic hit-and-run incident occurred along Cedar Bluff Road in Knoxville, Tennessee. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation recently announced that the pedestrian who lost his life in this devastating event has finally been identified after nearly three decades of mystery.

Unsolved Mystery for Nearly 30 Years

The victim, a man between the ages of 51 and 60 at the time of his death, was left without any identification. Despite extensive efforts by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office and the Knox County Regional Forensic Center, the victim remained unidentified for years, eventually being classified as a John Doe.

Breakthrough in Identification

After years of dead-ends, a breakthrough finally came in December 2022 when the Knox County Regional Forensic Center submitted a sample of the man’s remains to Othram Inc., a private lab in Texas, to create a comprehensive DNA profile. This profile was crucial in unlocking the mystery surrounding the victim’s identity.

Collaborative Efforts Lead to Closure

In May 2023, TBI agents, alongside the Knox County Regional Forensic Center, worked together as part of the TBI Unidentified Human Remains DNA Initiative. Through the use of forensic genetic genealogical DNA testing, researchers were able to connect the victim to possible relatives, ultimately leading to the identification of Elbert Louis Brown.

A Homeless Man, Remembered

Elbert Louis Brown, originally from the York, South Carolina area, was last seen by his family in 1992 when he was homeless. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of the KCSO, Knox County RFC, and TBI, Brown’s remains have finally been identified, bringing closure to a nearly 30-year-old mystery.

The long-awaited identification of Elbert Louis Brown serves as a reminder of the importance of perseverance and collaboration in solving cold cases and bringing closure to families affected by tragedy.
