A former Philadelphia police officer has pleaded guilty on Friday after fatally shooting a 12-year-old boy in the back in March 2022. Edsaul Mendoza, 28, entered a guilty plea to third-degree murder and possession of an instrument of crime, according to court documents.

The Incident Location

The tragic incident took place in Philadelphia, where Mendoza was one of four plainclothes officers on patrol. The officers pulled up to 12-year-old Thomas “TJ” Siderio and a 17-year-old identified as “NK,” according to Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner.

Mendoza’s Guilty Plea

Initially charged with first-degree murder, the charge against Mendoza has since been dismissed. Third-degree murder, the charge he pleaded guilty to, can carry a sentence of up to 40 years in prison.
